Waiting Around

We are just waiting for Monday to move into our house.  Yesterday was the closing on the house, a rather interesting experience.  In Alabama they use an attorney's closing service which means you go to a conference room with all the interested parties and finish up the paperwork.  So both realtors, us, the sellers, the lender's representative, and the attorney sit around a big table.  (Anna and Micah watch a DVD in a corner.)  The attorney passes around all the documents for the various parties to sign, explains all the charges, and hands out the copies.  The sellers give us the keys and give a few tips on getting the water and power company to cooperate.  We get a copy of the deed, which we have to go and record ourselves.  The realtors get their checks.  Micah and Anna get lots of snacks to keep them quiet.  We exchange phone numbers with the seller in case there are any questions later.  Can you imagine this happening in California?  The lender said he's heard stories of buyers and sellers pulling knives on each other at this little meeting.

So the sale is officially closed.  The loan will fund sometime next week.  The sellers will move out today and we should get possession on Monday.  Assuming the wife doesn't go into labor, she is already overdue.

  1. How is that different from California? That sounded like the only closing I've been to - gather in a room and everyone signs their papers and gets their checks - takes about half hour.
