Where Library Books Go to Die
But you can give them a new life! For those living locally to me, you must check out the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library Book Den. Here's their page. Basically, all the unused donated materials and items taken from public circulation go to the warehouse and some go up for sale at the Book Den. You do have to search through a lot of titles but you can find some bargains! Most items are $2. They also have collections and rare books for purchase.
I discovered them today when I went in to spend the $10 gift certificate I got during the summer reading program. I got an older but unused Hooked on Phonics set, a very nicely illustrated children's bible, a great children's dictionary, a book of fun children's activities, and Jim Trelease's Read Aloud Handbook.
If you are interested, this Saturday and Sunday they are having a bag sale in the warehouse. For $6 you get to fill a grocery bag with books. (I wasn't planning on going but if you want to, I might join you.) Probably not the place to look for specific titles but a great place to go if you have insatiable readers in your family.
